3D Game Development and VR - With the Faeries

A VR Game created as part of my Design Masters degree. The goal was to create a relaxing game using sound visualisation.

With the Faeries

You find yourself stood in the center of a faerie ring which pulses softly with light. Before you are three standing stone. A lone harp can be heard on the wind.

The Concept

I took inspiration from folk lore to create an ethereal yet calm and peaceful environment. The original plan was to have a larger area with a more realistic design. However, in order to work as a mobile app for the Samsung Gear VR headset, the quality had to be reduced.

The Process

Movement

Raycasting

Events

As I had never create a VR game prior to this, I started by creating a series smaller environments in which to test the various individual elements that would become the final product. These main elements were:

  • Movement - Needed to be smooth to reduce the possibilty of motion sickness

  • Raycasting - Interaction needed to be simple and clear for a limited control scheme

  • Events - Different elements and instruments would be added to the environment depending on which triggers were active

Interactivity

Based on ancient standing stones, the stones have a hole in which the user can place the orb with the matching symbol. When placed, the stone lights up and adds elements into the environemt in the form of an additional instrument and a visual that will pulse or move in time with that instrument.

  • Blue - Flute and Will-o-Wisp

  • Green - Strings and Aurora

  • Red - Harp and Mushrooms

Green orb with the Strings symbol

A ring of mushrooms pulse in time with the harp

A will-o-wisp circles the area and moves up and down with the flute

An aurora in the sky pulses with the strings
